HaX RTK Setup for Android (H version – deprecated)

This setup should be followed only if your HaX RTK device has a serial number starting with H (Produced until September 2023, see example below). If you acquired your HaX RTK receiver after September 2023 and your HaX serial number starts with J, you should follow the new workflow here.

Before you start configuring your HaX RTK GNSS receiver, here are the mandatory steps you need to follow to use all the features of the HaX.

Important note: A 4G/5G internet connection is required to configure and use your HaX RTK GNSS receiver. The Wi-Fi network is reserved for the connection between the smartphone (or tablet) and the HaX.

Configuration steps to follow

  1. Setup of the hotspot connection between the HaX and your mobile device with the Emlid Flow app. The connection between your mobile device and the HaX is made using the hotspot function (via TCP). This function must be configured beforehand through Wi-Fi.
  2. Setup of the NTRIP corrections in the Emlid Flow.
  3. Setup of the RTK mode in the KickTheMap app.
  4. Create your first job to create a georeferenced 3D model.

Before starting your HaX setup, you need to download two apps on your smartphone/tablet.

1. iOS/HaX hotspot connection setup

The first step is to set up hotspot connection between your device and HaX.

Note your mobile device name and password

Your Android device has a name and password set to allow other devices to connect to it through the hotspot feature. Make a note of the name and password as you will need them to automatically establish the connection between HaX and your Android device.

If you change your device’s name and password, the HaX will no longer be able to connect automatically to your Android device. It will be necessary to restart all the setup from this step.

Turn on the HaX

Press once the power button, the LEDs on the bottom face of the HaX will light up according to the battery level.

Connect your HaX through Wi-fi first

The Wi-Fi function of your Android device is only used to set up automatic hotspot connection between the HaX and your Android device.

Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi

In your Wi-Fi settings, the name of your receiver “HaX-KickTheMap:XX:XX” should appear (it may take up to a minute). Connect to the receiver.

Set up Hotspot connection in the Emlid Flow app

Open the Emlid Flow app, previously downloaded (find the article here).

If the Wi-Fi connection was successful, the HaX is available on the first page of the app in the list of available receivers.

The internal GNSS module of the HaX is a Reach M2 model, which is why the Reach M2 term is used in the Emlid Flow app.

Get into the Wi-Fi settings of your HaX to create a new network for the hotspot connection.

Settings-> Wi-Fi -> Connect to a Hidden network 

Create a new network.

Enter the Network name, the Password and the security type. The “network name” is your mobile device name noted above, the “password” is the password and the security type must be set to “WPA-PSK”. If the password has 16 characters or more, select “WPA2-PSK“.

Hotspot connection setup is now completed, you can exit the Emlid Flow app and move on to the next step, connecting the HaX with your Android device through the hotspot.

2.Android/HaX connection

The following process is the same every time you use your HaX.

First, make sure your HaX is turned off.

Open the hotspot page.

Settings -> Connections -> Mobile Hotspot and Tethering -> Mobile Hotspot

Your mobile hotspot should be off.

Turn on the HaX.

Press x1 to turn on the HaX

Within the first 10 seconds after turning on the HaX, activate the hotspot.

You can quickly see your HaX appear in the list of connected devices and a small icon in the status bar.

If the HaX does not appear quickly as a connected device, either you made a typo when setting up hotspot connection or you waited too long to activate hotspot after turning on the HaX.

Optional: To verify that the connection was successful, you can also open the Emlid Flow app and see the HaX in the list of available receivers.

Now that the hotspot connection between your Android mobile device and the HaX is working well, you can move on to the next step.

3.NTRIP corrections setup

In order to receive RTK corrections, it is necessary to configure the HaX with your NTRIP corrections subscription information.

Connect your HaX to your mobile device as previously explained in 2.Android/HaX Connection.

NTRIP configuration in Emild Flow

Open the Emlid Flow app and select your HaX from the list of available receivers.

In the correction input menu, create a new NTRIP profile.

Then add a new NTRIP profile:

Enter a personal profile name then fill in the address, port, username and password that were provided to you when you purchased your RTK correction subscription. Then press “mount point” and select the desired data stream.

Do not forget to save the new NTRIP profile. This one will be chosen, by default, during your future connections.

It is possible to save several NTRIP profiles, and select them according to the projects. To change from one profile to another, you must select the right profile in the list of available profiles in the profile tab of the Emlid Flow application.

You can check the validity of your NTRIP account, when the status “Waiting for corrections” is updated to “Receiving corrections”. Please note that those corrections can be received only with a good GNSS solution (good satellite coverage, not possible indoor).

The NTRIP configuration is now complete, you can move on to the next step.

4.RTK mode configuration in KickTheMap app

Connect the HaX and your mobile device with the hotspot

Connect your HaX to your mobile device as previously explained in 2.Android/HaX Connection.

Note down the IP address of your HaX

Open Emlid Flow and note down the IP address displayed below the HaX.

Set up TRK parameters in the KickTheMap app

Open the KickTheMap app and enter the email and password of your KickTheMap account to log in.

If you don’t have a KickTheMap account yet, you can sign up directly from the KickTheMap application homepage.

Press on the small cogwheel icon at the top left to open the RTK configuration.

If the cogwheel does not appear, this means that your KickTheMap account is not activated for RTK mode. Please contact the vendor to get this activation.

Activate the RTK mode, then three mandatory components must be configured:

  1. The IP address and the port on which your HaX is connected
  2. The camera height used by the KickTheMap app
  3. The output coordinate system

Enter the IP address previously noted from the Emlid Flow app.

The port must always be set to 10110.

Camera height in the GNSS Antenna alignment

In order to obtain a centimetric accuracy on images’ positions, the exact position of the camera is required. For this, the vertical distance (in centimetres) between the bottom edge of the HaX and the main camera must be indicated in the app.

In order to get this height, you should use the ruler of the HaX to:

  • align the main camera used by the KickTheMap app (every use of the HaX requires this alignment)

If you have more than one camera on your mobile device, an easy solution is provided in the following article to find out which camera is used by the KickTheMap application.
  • And read the vertical distance on the ruler (in centimetres with decimals) between the bottom edge of the HaX and the centre of the camera as accurately as possible and enter this value into the KickTheMap app.

Output coordinate system for your 3D model

Select your country as well as the desired planimetric and altimetric coordinate systems for 3D models.

Make sure that the mounting point selected in the NTRIP configuration is consistent with the output coordinate systems for your jobs.

Do not forget to save configuration.

Well done! Your HaX is now configured for your use, you can now create your first job in RTK mode.
